thePlatform Selects Harmonic's Rhozet Video Transcoding Technology

March 10, 2008

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 10, 2008--Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ:HLIT) today announced that its Rhozet(R) Carbon Coder(TM) video transcoding solution has been deployed by leading broadband video management and publishing provider, thePlatform. A subsidiary of Comcast, thePlatform is using Carbon Coder in its new mpsManage Transcoding Service. Carbon Coder was selected by thePlatform due to its broad format support, including strong support for Web and mobile formats, as well as its excellent reputation among thePlatform's existing client base.

Leading media companies and video websites -- such as BBC, CNBC, CBS's College Sports TV, Gannett, Helio, HIT Entertainment, Sony BMG, and Verizon Wireless -- currently use thePlatform's media publishing system. The mpsManage Transcoding Service is a hosted solution that offers two transcoding options that utilize Rhozet Carbon Coder -- a shared service for customers using thePlatform's system who have low to medium volumes and general transcoding requirements, or dedicated servers for customers who have higher volumes or custom transcoding requirements.

"We believe that a complete broadband video management and publishing solution should combine the best technologies to meet our customers' business needs," said Marty Roberts, Vice President of Marketing at thePlatform. "By providing comprehensive format support, including the latest mobile formats, a cost-effective price, and a software development kit that is easily integrated into our end-to-end solutions model, the Rhozet Carbon Coder technology meets all of the criteria for our new mpsManage Transcoding Service."

"For thePlatform to meet the demands of its growing business, especially its mobile business, they need a solution that supports a wide array of formats, delivers high quality output, and offers outstanding value," said David Trescot, Vice President of the Rhozet Business Unit at Harmonic Inc. "Carbon Coder is able to deliver these capabilities and more -- giving thePlatform a competitive edge in their expanding market."

Harmonic's Rhozet Carbon Coder is a universal transcoding application that facilitates the transfer of media between a variety of platforms, including acquisition, editing, playout, archive, the Internet and mobile devices. Carbon Coder can run as a stand-alone application or as part of a multi-node, fully-automated rendering farm. Carbon Coder provides high-performance, scalable and cost-effective transcoding for a broad range of business environments, from specialized studios to enterprise-scale installations.
