SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 2007--Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ:HLIT) today announced that SatLink Communications Ltd., a leading teleport based in Israel, has expanded its channel capacity with a new transport using Harmonic's DiviCom(R) Electra(TM) 1000 multi-channel MPEG-2 encoders, the ProStream(TM) 1000 with DiviTrackIP(TM) statistical multiplexing and NMX Digital Service Manager(TM). The highly bandwidth-efficient Harmonic solution deployed for the new video service increases the number of channels that can be delivered while also providing viewers with superior picture quality. SatLink provides world-class global content distribution services to content providers, broadcasters and governments, including satellite downlink, uplink, turnaround, fiber and IP transmission services, and is backed by shareholders including the Eurocom Group, Barak013 and Globecast.
As the demand for a greater variety of video programming and services continues to grow, satellite operators around the world are investing in Harmonic's integrated and versatile video headend solutions, including the high performance Electra family of standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) IP-based compression systems. DiviTrackIP -- an innovative solution for maximizing bandwidth efficiency in a distributed environment -- is the world's first IP-based statistical multiplexing solution, now in use to deliver thousands of channels worldwide.
"Only with the latest generation solutions has SatLink felt comfortable providing statistical multiplexed services in order to maximize bandwidth utilization for our clients' channels and we are very pleased to launch our first such system using Harmonic's equipment," said David Hochner, CEO of SatLink Communications. "At SatLink we have a reputation for providing our clients with the highest quality service and the implementation of this new system is in line with our world-class service policy."
"SatLink's service expansion is indicative of the increasing consumer demand for more diversity in video programming," said Nimrod Ben-Natan, Vice President of Products and Strategy for Harmonic Inc. "To meet this need, satellite operators like SatLink need flexible variable bit-rate systems that enable them to maximize the number of channels per transponder. The combination of the Electra multi-channel encoders and DiviTrackIP offers a highly cost-effective solution that makes it possible for SatLink to enhance their business by provisioning a greater range of broadcast channels."
