Qrix Communications Selects Harmonic's universal edgeQAM for Wideband Modular CMTS Trial
DOCSIS(TM) 3.0 Ready NSG(TM) 9000 Provides More Bandwidth to Cable
Customers for Video, High-Speed Data and Other Applications
SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 21, 2007--Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ:HLIT) today announced that Qrix Communications Inc., one of Korea's leading cable service providers delivering video, voice and data services to more than 710,000 subscribers, has launched a wideband modular cable modem termination system (M-CMTS) trial using Harmonic's industry-leading NSG(TM) 9000 universal edgeQAM. The ultra-flexible, high density NSG 9000 is capable of reaching up to 72 QAM RF outputs per unit and supports a wide variety of applications including broadcast, video-on-demand (VOD), switched digital video (SDV), M-CMTS and DOCSIS(TM) 3.0.
Demand for downstream bandwidth is growing dramatically, as consumers increase their usage of applications such as movie downloads, peer-to-peer file transfer, video streaming, video sharing on websites and blogs. Cable operators are challenged to meet the end user's performance expectations while using a fixed amount of bandwidth shared among hundreds of subscribers. The wideband M-CMTS architecture using the NSG 9000 universal edgeQAM offers a cost-effective bandwidth expansion solution that enables Qrix to deliver up to 100 Mbps to the home.
"Harmonic's market leadership and expertise in VOD and edge processing are unmatched," said Mr. Seo Bo-Weon, IT Business Director of Qrix Communications. "The new NSG 9000 edgeQAM offers the best RF performance, reliability and integration with the CMTS. Furthermore, the fact that it is DOCSIS 3.0 ready provides us with a viable interim solution that can easily be upgraded, allowing us to continue enhancing the service offering for our subscribers in the future while using the existing infrastructure."
"The intensifying demand for video and data services is driving cable operators to implement a variety of new solutions including SDV and modular CMTS," said Gil Katz, Director of Cable Solutions for Harmonic Inc. "The NSG 9000 was designed to be the industry's first truly universal edgeQAM, and is in use today by a number of leading MSOs around the world for VOD edge processing, SDV and M-CMTS delivered using new wideband cable modems as well as legacy cable modems in the installed base."
Harmonic's NSG 9000 is the fourth-generation platform in Harmonic's multi-award winning IP-enabled edgeQAM product family, and is the highest density platform currently deployed. A highly integrated digital video gateway which multiplexes on-demand content streamed over an IP network, the NSG 9000 includes DOCSIS 3.0 support and redundancy options that streamline the provisioning of IP-based services including voice-over-IP (VOIP) and broadband Internet access.
