SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 2005--

Industry-Leading Fiber-to-the-Premises Video Overlay Efficiently and Cost-Effectively Delivers Digital and/or Analog TV to Complete the

Telco Video, Voice and Data Triple Play

Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT), the first provider of a TL 9000 certified Video Optical Line Terminal (V-OLT) for FTTP networks, today announced that the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has selected its MAXLink(TM)-based video transport solution for the ITU-T FTTP Interoperability Pavilion at SUPERCOMM 2005, June 7 - 9 in Chicago, Illinois. Compliant with related ITU-T and other telco industry standards, Harmonic's industry-leading solution efficiently and cost-effectively provides video-specific bandwidth of up to 5.2 gigabits per second (Gbps) to each home, sufficient to carry more than 250 MPEG-2 high definition (HD) channels. At SUPERCOMM, the Harmonic V-OLT will be used to deliver television content over leading FTTP passive optical network (PON) solutions to complete the video, voice and data triple play.

With increasing competition in the voice and data markets, video is quickly becoming a critical part of a telco's service offering. To maintain a leadership position, operators will need to deliver a multitude of broadcast TV channels as well as video-on-demand, each with a broadcast-quality picture. For next-generation full service networks, which are being targeted for greenfield and highly competitive markets, the FTTP PON with a video overlay is emerging as a preferred architecture for delivering the triple play.

As large-scale FTTP deployments are now in progress, video is a major focus for telcos around the world. At the ITU-T FTTP Interoperability Pavilion, the International Telecommunication Union will use Harmonic's V-OLT to deliver broadcast television services over leading PON solutions. Consisting of the MAXLink video optical transmitter, the MAXLink video optical amplifier and bi-directional CWDM optical multiplexer, the Harmonic system is FSAN and ITU-T G.982, G.983 and G.984 compliant as well as NEBS Level 3 and TL 9000 certified to ensure interoperability with other central office and network infrastructure equipment.

"Harmonic's standards compliant, NEBS Level 3 and TL 9000 certified FTTP video overlay enables RBOCs and other telcos to very quickly and cost-effectively introduce a competitive range of television services," said Patrick Harshman, President of the Broadband Access Networks Division at Harmonic Inc. "In addition to carrying both analog and digital TV, the exceptional reach and capacity of our solution makes it possible to deliver a full channel line-up in standard and/or high definition formats to the customer premises without consuming precious bandwidth needed for voice and data services. The ITU-sponsored FTTP demonstration at SUPERCOMM will serve to affirm the practicality of the solution and our interoperability with different PON types and providers."

Harmonic-patented technology embedded within the FTTP video overlay solution gives system operators the flexibility to increase channel capacity, transmit longer distances, or lower overall costs without sacrificing performance. The resulting broadcast video service is fully compatible with existing coaxial cabling and televisions in the customer premises, improving time-to-market, reducing technological risk, enhancing market coverage, minimizing copyright concerns, in addition to lowering capital and operating expenditures.

In addition to being featured in the ITU-T FTTP Interoperability Pavilion (Booth #76088F), the Video Optical Line Terminal Solution will also be showcased in the Harmonic booth (#29035) at SUPERCOMM 2005.

About the Harmonic Video Optical Line Terminal Solution (V-OLT)

Based on Harmonic's patented MAXLink transport solution, the V-OLT utilizes the 1550 nm optical wavelength as a "video enhancement band" that provides multi-channel RF broadcast video services over a wide range of passive optical network (PON) architectures. This approach allows telcos to leverage an architecture and the economies of scale established and proven by the cable industry. Harmonic's MAXLink technology has been extensively deployed by leading cable operators around the world. Compliance with FSAN as well as ITU-T G.982, G.983 and G.984 series recommendations combined with NEBS Level 3 and TL 9000 certification ensures that Harmonic's solution is suitable for the telco central office environment.
