Harmonic's Universal EdgeQAM Deployed in Wideband DOCSIS Upgrade by Korea's Hanaro Telecom

June 18, 2008
Harmonic's NSG(TM) 9000 Modular CMTS Solution More Than Triples
                  Bandwidth Delivered to Subscribers

SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 18, 2008--Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that Hanaro Telecom (NASDAQ: HANAY.PK), a leading telecommunications company in Korea serving approximately 6 million subscribers via cable and DSL networks, has extensively deployed Harmonic's Narrowcast Services Gateway(TM) (NSG(TM)) 9000 universal edgeQAMs to increase bandwidth offered to cable subscribers. Hanaro's wideband DOCSIS 2.0B modular cable modem termination system (M-CMTS) service with channel bonding, capable of delivering 150 Mbps or more, is fully operational and has been very well received by Hanaro customers. Harmonic's NSG universal edge platform is a powerful solution for the cost-effective expansion of high-speed data capacity, while also freeing up critical network resources for cable IPTV and other advanced services.

The NSG 9000's integrated DOCSIS 3.0 timing interface (DTI), which maximizes channel capacity by enabling clock synchronization in M-CMTS applications, was a critical factor in Hanaro's decision. The superior RF performance of the NSG platform, which exceeds the DOCSIS RF Interface (DRFI) specification in several critical RF parameters, was also a key differentiator, as was the NSG's capability to be implemented in a Direct-to-Edge cable IPTV environment.

"Hanaro is committed to deliver a superior broadband data service, and the Harmonic solution allows us to do so with very little additional investment or operating costs," said Mr. Chan Woong Park, Senior Vice President of the Network Technology Division at Hanaro. "Harmonic's NSG 9000 has been widely deployed throughout our network, and our transition to a wideband M-CMTS service has been very smooth and efficient."

"Hanaro is a highly innovative operator at the forefront of IP-based service delivery," said Gil Katz, Director of Cable Solutions and Strategy for Harmonic Inc. "Harmonic is rolling out M-CMTS services to more than 25 operators throughout Asia, Europe, and North America, in a variety of environments using DOCSIS 3.0 or legacy DOCSIS 2.0 cable modems. The highly flexible and advanced NSG platform is very attractive to forward-looking operators such as Hanaro, who are providing their customers world-class data service today, while also investing in a platform that can cost-effectively scale to meet their future requirements."

The multi award-winning NSG 9000 is in use by cable operators worldwide for video-on-demand (VOD), M-CMTS, switched digital video (SDV), broadcast, and edge encryption applications. A highly integrated digital video gateway which multiplexes on-demand video and data, the NSG 9000 offers superior RF performance and redundancy options that streamline the provisioning of IP-based services including voice-over-IP (VOIP) and broadband Internet access.
