Harmonic Wins International Engineering Consortium's InfoVision Award for Best Wireless Broadband Product
COLOGNE, Germany, May 30, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT): FLXLink(TM) T1/E1 Solution Honored for Delivering Scalable Bandwidth Needed for Existing and Emerging Mobile Voice, Data and Video Services
Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT) today announced that its scalable FLXLink(TM) T1/E1 commercial services solution is a winner of the International Engineering Consortium's (IEC) InfoVision Award for best wireless broadband solution. With the capacity to transport existing mobile digital voice and data, and the scalable bandwidth needed to deliver emerging interactive video and other multimedia applications, the FLXLink T1/E1 system is a key foundation of the anytime, anywhere voice, data and video triple play. The prestigious InfoVision awards are presented annually to recognize the most compelling broadband products such as Harmonic's FLXLink T1/E1 which enables services that are changing the way people live, work and play.
Cost-effective wireless communications and modern lifestyles have led to explosive growth in the number of mobile subscribers and increased bandwidth delivered to/from an increasing array of portable devices. These advances in technology and changes to consumer behavior are ushering in a new era, with wireless services evolving from voice and simple data today to high-speed data, streaming on-demand video and other bandwidth-intensive applications. While the world is becoming evermore dependent on wireless devices, operators will remain reliant on high-speed fiber optic systems, such as the FLXLink T1/E1, to efficiently and securely transport and distribute an even greater volume and variety of services to the edge of the wireless network while ensuring compatibility with the existing infrastructure.
"Consumers are hungry for more services that can be accessed via a range of devices, which means the backhauling of digital content is critically important for both established wireless operators and other triple play service providers," said Sunil Frida, Commercial Services Solution Manager for Harmonic Inc. "To meet this growing demand, innovative operators are now introducing wireless networks and devices with downstream data transfer rates of up to 14.4 Mbps and upstream bandwidth of 2.0 Mbps. The IEC's selection of our FLXLink T1/E1 system as a best-in-class broadband solution, combined with the fact that operators around the world are implementing a FLXLink-based infrastructure, underscores the need for scalable bandwidth to enable and extend the emerging mobile triple play."
The versatile FLXLink solution uses up to 10 dedicated CWDM wavelengths on a single fiber, each of which transports multiple T1/E1 circuits in addition to providing high-speed Ethernet connectivity, to carry voice, data and video between the fiber-based access network and the towers at the edge of the wireless network. When used in conjunction with Harmonic's high performance video compression systems -- both the real-time DiviCom(R) encoders for ultra-low bit-rate broadcast video and the CLEARcut(TM) storage encoding solution for the efficient compression of video for on-demand services -- FLXLink makes the transport of increasing volumes of mobile content a reality. In addition to supporting the backhaul of wireless services, the FLXLink T1/E1 can be used by cable, telecom and other broadband network operators to provision a variety of enterprise applications such as PBX interconnect, VPN, high-speed Internet access and managed services.
Each year, the IEC's InfoVision awards committee receives hundreds of entries within several categories. The judging panels are composed of experts in broadband communications technologies and services from a range of organizations including service providers and industry associations. Winners are selected based on the value of the solution in solving technology problems, ability to meet network and service requirements, contribution to technology advancement, originality, vision, potential contribution to industry growth and market success.
This represents the third internationally recognized award presented to Harmonic during 2006. Other awards are "Best Foreign Technical Development for Cable and Satellite TV" given to the Broadcast Network Gateway(TM) at CSTB 2006 in Moscow, Russia and the "Product of the Year" presented to the Narrowcast Services Gateway(TM) by the SCTE of the United Kingdom.
