Harmonic Enables Video-on-Demand Capability for Non Real-Time Content Delivery

April 16, 2007

Allows Operators with Limited Bandwidth to Offer On-Demand and

Provides Simple Upgrade Path to Real-Time VOD Services

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 2007--Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced availability of new video-on-demand (VOD) capabilities for non real-time content delivery on its StreamLiner(R) 2000 video server product line. The new functionality allows the video servers to download assets to set-top box hard drives, in addition to the existing support available on the StreamLiner platform for real-time VOD sessions. The download capability is designed for service providers such as satellite direct-to-home (DTH), terrestrial (DVB-T) and telco operators who are not able to guarantee or deliver a real-time VOD service today. Over time, as the network capabilities are enhanced, those service providers who have invested in Harmonic's on-demand solution can easily switch to real-time VOD services with minimal effort and without needing to deploy a completely new solution.

Viewers continue to increase their consumption of VOD content, which currently is available as a real-time service from many cable and telco video service providers. The download VOD capability more nearly approaches a competitive VOD service than other alternatives such as pay-per-view or push VOD by enabling viewers to access a rich on-demand content library and order the desired programming for future viewing. The StreamLiner downloads the assets to the customer premise equipment (CPE) such as a set-top box or PC in an optimal manner based on bandwidth availability. This technology is backed by Harmonic's comprehensive on-demand solution, which encompasses real-time and offline content preparation, content ingest, intelligent asset distribution and edge processing, emulating a typical VOD system.

"The new download capability available on the StreamLiner video servers opens up new business models for satellite, terrestrial and telco operators previously unable to offer a VOD service," said Shahar Bar, Director of On-Demand Solutions for Harmonic Inc. "The StreamLiner gives bandwidth-constrained service providers the ability to offer a competitive service offering with a simple migration to real-time VOD."

Software-based solutions from Harmonic support the full spectrum of on-demand applications, including VOD, near VOD, time-shifted TV, network personal video recording (nPVR), barker channels and advertisement insertion. Harmonic will demonstrate the new VOD capability on the StreamLiner video servers as part of its everything-on-demand solutions at the NAB2007 exhibition in Las Vegas from April 16-19 at booth #SU9620.
