Harmonic Demonstrates End-to-End FTTx System Supporting Video, Voice and Data Services Over IP

November 28, 2001
ANAHEIM, Calif., Nov 28, 2001 (BUSNESS WIRE) --

Full Service Solution Enables Operators To Access Business Market and Increase Services to Residential Customers

Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT) is demonstrating a full-service IP network system at the California Cable Television Association's Western Show. The end-to-end solution delivers video-over-IP, voice-over-IP and high-speed data using Ethernet via fiber-to-the-business (FTTB) and home (FTTH). The system enables operators to provide service bundles for the business market while providing additional revenue-generating services to their residential subscribers.

"As the competition increases for offering business and residential telecommunication services, operators require cost-effective systems for delivering bundled data, video and voice services," said Chris Bonang, Senior Director of Market Development for Harmonic's Broadband Access Networks Division. "In light of the changing market dynamics and customer requirements, FTTx affords the scalability and flexibility to generate a consistent, long-term competitive advantage. The showcased FTTx solution illustrates how Harmonic products -- from digital video encoders to node based switches -- deployed in conjunction with products from our solution partners give operators a versatile end-to-end architecture for delivering next generation IP services."

The demonstration represents a full-service network with content delivered from three sources: a video headend, a data/telephony gateway and a "local content" server. Signals are combined by a router and transmitted via Gigabit Ethernet fiber to a Harmonic CURBswitch Ethernet switch module mounted in Harmonic's scalable node platform. The 100BaseFX outputs from the CURBswitch feed: a `business' with voice and data services through a 3M Volition Gateway; and a `home' with video, voice and data services using a Harmonic NIU, 3M Volition Gateway and a Fujitsu IP set-top box.

The system also includes Harmonic's DiviCom digital video encoders, THESYS Network Management System and NETWatch Element Manager. The FTTx CURBswitch Module is housed in a PWRBlazer II scaleable node. Each node is both compact and environmentally-hardened to withstand temperature changes and other elements. For fast and cost-efficient deployment, the nodes can be mounted on utility poles, pedestals or underground in sewer systems.
