Harmonic Adds New Software-Based Content Ingest Capabilities for On-Demand Applications

April 16, 2007

-- New LIVEcut(TM) Scheduler and Enhanced Ingest Gateway Solution

Further Automate and Simplify Creation of Video Assets --

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 2007--Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ:HLIT) today enhanced its on-demand software solutions to simplify the creation of video assets from live and offline sources with the introduction of the LIVEcut(TM) scheduler and new functionality on the Ingest Gateway. LIVEcut is a software application that enables service providers to automate the capture of broadcast video content for on-demand applications including video-on-demand (VOD), time-shifted television or network personal video recording (nPVR). Ingest Gateway, a workflow system for managing the ingest of offline assets, has been integrated with Harmonic's CLEARcut(TM) storage encoding solution to facilitate the video processing needed prior to storage on the StreamLiner(R) 2000 video server. These enhancements benefit service providers by reducing cost and complexity in the on-demand content preparation process.

LIVEcut incorporates an intuitive graphical user interface for scheduling content capture based upon operators' electronic program guides. The system provides the user-defined scheduling information and business rules to Harmonic's StreamLiner which in turn captures the content and propagates it throughout to the on-demand network via the Armada(R) intelligent asset manager.

The Ingest Gateway integration with CLEARcut automates the preparation of video content acquired from various offline sources. As assets are processed for on-demand viewing, they need to go through a variety of processes including encryption, metadata management, ingest to the video server and middleware notification. Previously, adjustments to the VOD assets such as re-encoding, transcoding and concatenation were a separate process, but the newly integrated solution allows the video processing to be fully integrated within the workflow management offered by the Ingest Gateway, providing operators with a simple and intuitive "hands off" ingest solution.

"As cable and telco service providers become more sophisticated in their on-demand offerings, the ability to schedule and manage the capture of live content for later viewing is becoming increasingly important," said Shahar Bar, Director of On-Demand Solutions for Harmonic Inc. "The LIVEcut scheduler, in combination with Harmonic's ProStream(TM) 1000 stream processing platform with Mentor(TM) re-encoding technology, offers the most advanced solution for automated capture of live content for on-demand viewing. Consequently, service providers can reduce the human intervention required in asset capture, lowering costs and eliminating some of the complexity in the on-demand architecture."

Harmonic offers a fully IP-based on-demand video solution, encompassing content creation, preparation, ingest, intelligent asset management and distribution. The combination of Harmonic's market-leading video compression systems, stream processing solutions, edge devices, HFC broadband access equipment and on-demand solutions provides operators with a comprehensive and high quality video delivery architecture for the next generation of broadcast and on-demand video services.

LIVEcut, Ingest Gateway and CLEARcut will be featured as part of Harmonic's everything-on-demand solution at the NAB exhibition in Las Vegas from April 16-19, at Harmonic's booth #SU9620.
