Sinclair Broadcast Group Selects Harmonic Digital Compression Systems; KOVR Sacramento is First Sinclair Station On-Air with DiviCom Encoders

January 22, 2002

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 22, 2002--Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT) has been chosen by Sinclair Broadcast Group (Sinclair) to provide digital compression systems for Sinclair's group-owned and operated TV stations. The compression systems include DiviCom(R) encoders and provide each Sinclair station the flexibility to deliver both standard and high definition broadcast services. KOVR in Sacramento, one of more than 60 stations in the Sinclair group, is the first Sinclair station on-air with the Harmonic equipment.

A television broadcasting pioneer, Sinclair is committed to making digital television (DTV) a reality. Sinclair-owned and operated stations reach approximately 25% of homes in the U.S. By selecting Harmonic's open architecture encoding systems for its broadcast facilities, Sinclair can work with other industry-leading vendors that will provide both interoperability with third party systems and an affordable upgrade path for the future.

"Harmonic compression systems are known throughout the broadcast industry for their quality and flexibility," said Harvey Arnold, Director of Engineering, Sinclair Broadcast Group. "When making our selection, it was crucial that the chosen solution be efficient and future-proof. Harmonic's MPEG-2 technology fits the bill."

"As an advocate for new technologies, Sinclair has played a prominent role in the development of DTV," said Dr. Yaron Simler, president of Harmonic's Convergent Systems Division. "We are proud to be supporting their DTV roll-out."
