NBC's Utah Affiliate Uses Harmonic Systems for Digital TV and Interactive Data Services Broadcasts During 2002 Winter Games

March 25, 2002
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Mar 25, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Bonneville International Corporation's KSL-TV, NBC's affiliate in Salt Lake City, Utah, selected DiviCom(R) digital video encoding and remultiplexing systems from Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT) to digitally broadcast the Games. KSL Television was Utah's Official Television Station for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Harmonic's solution allowed KSL-TV to deliver multiple digital services including High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) television, as well as digital radio and data through its 19.4 Mbps of ATSC bandwidth. KSL-TV demonstrates the viability, feasibility and the increased revenue potential associated with digital broadcasting.

Bonneville, the parent company of KSL-TV, owns and operates 21 television and radio stations from New York to Los Angeles. KSL-TV's signal covers seven states, the largest reach of any local U.S. broadcaster, and is one of America's most respected television stations, earning honors and awards from every television industry organization.

"We faced a monumental task in managing our digital spectrum during the 2002 Winter Games. We needed to broadcast NBC's high definition coverage, a standard definition DTV signal, continue service to our traditional analog viewers and lease extra bandwidth to WOW Digital TV to demonstrate DTV reception and ITV technologies," said Paul Boyden, DTV Engineer at KSL-TV. "Harmonic continues to be a great partner for KSL. They stepped up to the plate with systems that offer superior picture quality, performance, scalability, and reliability."

KSL-TV Delivers Multiple Digital Services via Harmonic's DiviTrackXE System

KSL-TV launched its first digital TV service in October 1999 using DiviCom encoders. For the Salt Lake Games, KSL-TV teamed with Harmonic and WOW Digital TV to upgrade the system with Harmonic's enhanced DiviTrackXE technology. This advanced statistical multiplexing solution enabled the simultaneous broadcast of HD and SD TV, digital radio and data across the same bandwidth. Using the WOW Digital TV system, KSL-TV viewers were able to receive unique interactive television content and services.

"KSL-TV highlights how Harmonic's broadcast solutions give broadcasters the required efficiency to provision enhanced services for viewers and advertisers while further increasing revenue potential by leasing segmented bandwidth," said Yaron Simler, President of Harmonic's Convergent Systems Division. "Using the DiviTrackXE system, KSL-TV improved their broadcast quality and efficiency over their existing constant bit-rate system, giving them the flexibility to add digital radio and interactive television services."

Harmonic's open standards-based digital broadcast solutions deliver superior picture quality and maximize transmission efficiency, providing capacity for new value-added services that generate a distinct competitive advantage and increase revenue opportunities. Broadcasters may deploy a pre-packaged solution, easing the transition to standard and/or high definition digital television, or implement a fully customized system. Solutions encompass the award winning DiviCom encoders, video and data multiplexers, and network management systems.
